San Beda lead not enough — NCAA not awarding overall champ for Season 95

    Jun 23, 2020

    TOO close to call.

It's the rationale of the NCAA on why it did not award a general champion for Season 95.

"We're not able to award the general champions simply because those events which were scheduled or were set to be competed, the top three spots were still up for grabs," said last season's Management Committee chair Peter Cayco of host Arellano.

San Beda was leading the count in the seniors division, claiming seven gold medals from men's and women's swimming, men's and women's table tennis, women's lawn tennis, and men's badminton.

The Red Lions were gunning for their fifth straight general championship and eighth overall.

Running second was St. Benilde, which took the crowns in both divisions of taekwondo, followed by Perpetual, which ruled chess.

The COVID-19 pandemic forced the league to cancel both divisions in volleyball, beach volleyball, track and field, football, futsal, men's lawn tennis and women's badminton.

The demonstration sport cheerdance competition was also scrapped.

San Beda was also leading in the juniors division, being named as champions in basketball, chess, taekwondo, table tennis, and 3x3 basketball.

The Red Cubs were intent to reclaim their throne after losing to Perpetual Junior Altas a year back.

Had San Beda won, it would've been their 15th overall in the high school level.

Unplayed in the juniors division were the volleyball, football, and futsal tournaments.

This was the first time in more than three decades that the NCAA did not award a general champion.

The last time it happened was in Season 61 in 1986 where no seniors champion was named. Mapua, however, was awarded the overall crown in the juniors division.

As for the next season, Mancom chair Fr. Vic Calvo of host Letran said that the general championship is the least of their concerns at this time.

"Di pa namin napagusapan yun. We'll cross the bridge when we get there," he said, with only the four mandatory sports, namely basketball, volleyball, swimming, and track and field, expected to be played this NCAA Season 96.

"Premature pa as of now. Wala pa sa isip namin yun. Ang nasa isip namin kung paano matutuloy at pano tulungan yung mga naapektuhan."
