COLLEGE of St. Benilde snapped the Mapua University Cardinals’ five-game winning streak with a 65-61 decision in the NCAA Season 99 men’s basketball tournament at FilOil EcoOil Centre on Wednesday.

The Blazers were in control of the second half of the ballgame to prevent a comeback by the Cardinals, who came close to two points in the fourth frame, 59-57, after a two-for-three free-throw-line trip by Paolo Hernandez.
Refusing to allow Mapua to tie or take the lead, Mark Sangco beats the shot clock buzzer with a three-point shot to extend the Blazer’s lead by five, 62-57, followed by another three from Miguel Corteza to add to the woes of the Cardinals.
JC Bonifacio tried to cut the lead of the Blazers to come close within one in the dying seconds of the game, but misfired a three-point attempt.
St. Benilde won its second straight game, its last during the finals rematch with Letran Knights in the first round last October 22, to take a 6-4 win-loss record, while Mapua dropped to 8-2.
Corteza led the scoring for College of St. Benilde with 17 points and nine assists, while Will Gozum finished with 11 points, three rebounds, and three assists.
Clint Escamis scored 19 points, five rebounds, and three assists, while Jopet Soriano scored 14 points, five rebounds, and one assist.
