EMILIO Aguinaldo College got back on trak in the NCAA Season 93 as it fended off Mapua University, 77-72, on Tuesday at the Filoil Flying V Center in San Juan.
The Generals wasted a 10 point fourth quarter lead but recovered just in time to end their two-game slide.
Sydney Onwubere, Jerome Garcia and Raymund Pascua drained the big shots down the stretch as the Generals found second wind in the endgame after trailing by three, 67-64 with 2:36 left.
"Thankful lang ako dahil we did not go 0-3. So at least yung dalawang talo namin ng sunod, hindi nasundan ng isa pa, so I'm very happy. We prepared hard for this game," said EAC head coach Ariel Sison.
"Sabi ko lang sa kanila, no worries, let it happen, good defense, focus, that's all," he added.
After leading by 10 points heading into the fourth, the Cardinals started hot in the fourth quarter led by the brilliant backcourt of Andoy Estrella and Leo Gabo.
The two led Mapua's 21-8 start to the payoff period, culminating in a Christian Bunag split to give the Cardinals a 67-64 advantage.
Garcia and Pascua scored six straight points to tow the Generals to a 70-67 lead with a minute and 23 left in the game.
Onwubere did the mop-up duties as the Cardinals never threatened from there.
"Iniisip ko lang nung last two minutes, lamang ang Mapua, hindi pwede to. Hindi na talaga kami pwede matalo. Kasi sinasabi ko na contender kami tapos ganun," said Onwubere who paced the Generals with 22 points and eight rebounds.
Juju Bautista, back from sick bay, notched a double-double with 12 points and 11 boards. Jervin Guzman had 13 points while Pascua Chipped in 11 for the Generals who improved to 2-2.
Gabo paced the Cardinala with 19 points and four assists as Cardinals slipped to their third straight defeat and fell to 1-3.
