Shorthanded Red Lions prove strong enough to clobber Cardinals as San Beda sustains surge

    Sep 8, 2017

SAN Beda won despite missing two key players and its head coach, beating Mapua, 88-70, on Friday in the NCAA Season 93 seniors basketball tournament at the Filoil Flying V Centre.

The Red Lions played without Robert Bolick and Clint Doliguez, and head coach Boyet Fernandez after being slapped with a one-game suspension following a scuffle late in their previous game against College of Saint Benilde.

AC Soberano stepped up for the Red Lions as he finished with 17 points, while Javee Mocon scattered 11 points and 10 rebounds as San Beda improved to 10-1.

San Beda assistant coach JB Sison called the shots for the Red Lions in lieu of the suspended Fernandez.

"I'm happy with the way we played despite the absence of Robert Bolick and Clint Doliguez, two of our best scorers," said San Beda team manager Jude Roque, who faced the media after the win.

"I think what's noticeable today was everybody stepped up, mas maganda ball movement. I'm really happy. They didn't look for a go-to-guy today. Everybody was able to score so ibig sabihin, umiikot 'yung bola," Roque added.

Leo Gabo had 17 points, while Denniel Aguirre finished with 16 points for Mapua, which is now on a 10-game slide to fall to 1-10.
