THE road to a Final Four berth has become a difficult one for San Sebastian, in the eyes of head coach Egay Macaraya, even though the Stags will have a relatively lighter schedule in their three remaining games in NCAA Season 93.
The Stags suffered a crucial 60-58 loss to Jose Rizal University to drop their record to 7-8. The Heavy Bombers, now in third place in the team standings, pulled away as they clinched at least a playoff for a Final Four berth with a 10-6 slate.
San Sebastian can still improve its fortunes as the Stags have the bottom teams in their remaining games in Arellano, Mapua, and Perpetual Help.
Macaraya, however, isn’t banking on the light schedule as he still sees tough games ahead with the Stags in a precarious situation.
“So far naman, sa magaan o sa hindi, ang laro kasi namin, on-and-off eh so walang consistency. It’s much better na mag-focus kami na manalo every game kesa mag-iisip kami sa three remaining games namin na medyo mahirap,” said Macaraya.
Macaraya said the Stags have nothing to blame but themselves following a cold shooting performance, hitting just 7-of-31 from three-point distance.
“Natalo kami dahil sa amin. Shooting 22 percent from three points, hindi talaga kami mananalo. Problema lang, doon kami namamatay at nabubuhay. ‘Yun ang pakiusap ko sa kanila. Kailangan naming ma-work ‘yun kasi kailangan namin ng magandang percentage sa three points,” said Macaraya.
Michael Calisaan also missed a lay-up in the endgame that could have sent the match into overtime. He finished with 15 points in the match but was the lone double-digit scorer for the Stags.
“Madulas lang ‘yung bola, hindi ko na-control ‘yung bola. Inexpect ko na ipapasa sa akin kaya nag-ready na ako pero nung nakuha ‘yung bola, hindi ko na-control masyado. Basa na ‘yung bola,” said Calisaan.
Calisaan echoed Macaraya’s statements, saying that they need to work on their shooting in the next games.
“Marami pa kaming dapat iimprove especially sa shooting at sa individual skills,” said Calisaan.
Calisaan said he is still not losing hope about the chances of the Stags in the Final Four.
“Siguro kung manalo kami sa three games namin, may chance pa kami. Matagal pa naman ‘yun maglalaban pa ‘yung nasa taas. Ang focus namin is to prepare ‘yung mga skills namin,” said Calisaan.
