SAN Beda used a strong start and a stronger finish to cripple Letran, 75-63, Tuesday in the NCAA Season 95 men's basketball tournament at Filoil Flying V Centre in San Juan.

The Red Lions were quick to assert their might, using a 17-1 start to stun the Knights.

But Letran was able to recover and an 8-0 third quarter run allowed it to level the game at 42 with 6:21 remaining in the frame.

That, however, was its last hurrah with San Beda responding with a killer 20-0 run to reinstate the commanding 62-42 advantage heading into the payoff period.

"It's really the players who really worked hard for this," said coach Boyet Fernandez. "At least naka-recover kami. We went back to our defensive mentalities, made some stops, and had the 20-0 run. The effort of the players should be credited for this win."

Calvin Oftana led the Red Lions with 16 points, six rebounds, and two assists, Clint Doliguez had 13 points and three boards, and James Canlas got 12 points and three rebounds.

Evan Nelle also continued to be magnificent in setting the stage for San Beda with 12 points, seven assists, five rebounds, and two steals without any turnovers.

"Winning this game is just the icing on the cake for us for the effort that we had in this game," said Fernandez, with his side improving to 15-0 and annexed their winning run to 29 straight games.

Despite moving three victories away from an eliminations sweep, Fernandez still doesn't want to look at the big picture as he'd like to remain taking every game at a time.

"Let's discuss the situation when it comes. We're just thinking of getting one more win from our last three wins. The challenge is to be the no. 1 team at the end of the eliminations," he said.
