DONALD Tankoua scored nine of the last 13 points for San Beda as it came away with the 73-66 win over Arellano to stretch its unbeaten run to 11 in the NCAA Season 95 seniors basketball tournament Friday at Filoil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
The Cameroonian slotman was pivotal in the Red Lions denying the Chiefs late fightback as they saw their 11-point lead, 60-49, chopped down to just one, 60-59.
There, Tankoua took over and scored eight straight points to restore order at 68-59 with 3:29 remaining.
He finished with 20 points on a 9-of-14 shooting, to go with nine rebounds, two assists, and one block as the Mendiola-based crew won their 23rd straight game dating back to last season.
"They rallied back, cutting the lead to just one, but our defense stepped up. Hopefully, this will be a wake up call for us. Sana matuto kami sa stretch na ito," rued coach Boyet Fernandez. "Like what I said, this is not easy picking for us. Tams are stronger right now and I hope everybody will realize that."
Evan Nelle also did his damage late, scoring four in the final three minutes as he wound up with eight points, seven rebounds, four assists, and two steals.
Clint Doliguez added 12 points, six boards, two assists, two steals, and two blocks, while James Canlas got 11 points, three rebounds, and three dimes, including the pivotal steal off of Kent Salado that iced the game for good for San Beda.
Justin Arana got 23 points, 15 rebounds, four blocks, and two assists for Arellano, but those weren't enough to stop his side from falling for the third straight game.
Gelo Sablan added 11 points and five rebounds, while Salado and Jade Talampas both scored 10 for the Chiefs, which remained at ninth place with their 2-9 card.
