COACH Boyet Fernandez is confident San Beda can achieve a title repeat but acknowledges that the competition is much higher and it will not be an easy run for the Red Lions in the NCAA Seaon 93 basketball tournament.
“It will be a tough season for San Beda but I came here for one objective and it’s to win a championship for San Beda. It will be a tough objective but we’ll do our best,” said Fernandez on Monday.
“Ang balik ko lang lagi sa mga players ko is we know that we’re the target, but if we continue to work hard and be ready every game, I think we’ll have a good chance of repeating. But again, it won’t be easy,” he added.
Robert Bollick, JV Mocon, Davon Potts and last year’s Finals Most Valuable Player Arnaud Noah are back from last year’s champion squad, and Fernandez is pleased they have responded well to the change in the system.
“When I left, I had Ola (Adeogun), I had Art (de la Cruz), Baser (Amer) and the Semerad twins, now they’re all playing well in the PBA and Ola’s now doing masteral now in San Beda,” Fernandez said.
“My line up now is composed of very athletic guys, workaholic. They always give their best in practice and they’re trying to adjust to my system,” he said.
The Lions showed their preparedness for the big dance with a sweep of the Filoil preseason tournament but Fernandez is not taking anyone lightly.
Lyceum has emerged as a contender, while teams like Jose Rizal University, San Sebastian, Letran and Arellano won’t make the Lions’ run to the title any easier.
“I’m happy with the NCAA. This is a strong league. The schools are improving every year. I watched them in the Filoil and I’m happy the schools have been improving.”
