SAN Beda shrugged of a dismal second quarter to get past lowly Jose Rizal University, 65-47, and extend its unbeaten run to 12 games in the NCAA Season 95 men’s basketball tournament on Thursday at the Arena in San Juan.
Limited to just six points in the second quarter and trailing the Heavy Bombers, 27-31, the Red Lions got their acts together late in the third, using a 23-4 run to take control on the way to their 24th straight victory dating to last season.
James Canlas had 18 points, seven rebounds, two assists and a steal, while Calvin Oftana put up 12 points on 4-for-6 shooting with seven rebounds, three blocks and as many as assists.
Evan Nelle had 11 points and four dimes, while Donald Tankoua added 10 markers.
“JRU did a good job today. It’s really been tough playing teams like JRU because nothing to lose e,” said San Beda coach Boyet Fernandez. “We really messed up in the first half.”
The Heavy Bombers outscored the Red Lions in the second quarter, 16-6, and tallied their biggest lead, 33-27, on John Delos Santos’s jumper to start the third period, before San Beda rallied to take control.
“My boys really stepped up. We played defense first then our offense just came in. Lesson learned for us again. I’m hoping that my players will really wake-up already,” Fernandez said.
