SAN Beda closed in on the first twice-to-beat incentive in Group B of the NCAA Season 101 after getting back at Jose Rizal University, 65-56, on Saturday at the Playtime Filoil Center in San Juan.
Missing his first five attempts from downtown, Janti Miller made the ones that mattered the most, hitting two in the final minute of the game to put away the upset-conscious Heavy Bombers who stayed hot in their heels, 59-56, up until his clutch heroics.
The victory kept the Red Lions atop the so-called ‘Group of Death’ with an 8-3 record with two games remaining, meaning that another win – or a loss from Letran (6-5) would clinch them the twice-to-beat advantage.
“I took a little step back in this game because I’ve been sick all week so this is like a first game back for me,” Miller said.
“At the last second, the ball came to me and I just had to put the game away, that’s the only thing on my mind.”
Miller finished with 16 points, eight rebounds and three assists while Bryan Sajonia continued his hot shooting for the Red Lions to finish with a game-high 18 markers.
Allen Laurenaria and Shawn Argente finished with 12 points apiece for the Heavy Bombers who now fall in danger for a play-in finish after dropping to 6-6.
