Robert Bolick and James Canlas spearheaded a huge third quarter where the Red Lions started to create separation from their old foes where at one point they took a 20-point lead, 59-39.
The Pirates came to life late in the fourth quarter with MJ Ayaay and JC Marcelino leading the brave fightback of the Pirates to make the game interesting in the end.
A lay-up by Ayaay trimmed the Red Lions’ lead to five, 73-68, with 36 seconds remaining and a turnover from the Red Lions left a window open for a comeback.
But Spencer Pretta missed a pass on the next possession allowing Bolick to seal the deal by hitting the marginal free throws.
"We're happy we got this one. The monkey is finally off our backs. Everybody was saying that we cannot beat them," said San Beda head coach Boyet Fernandez.
"Ang dami nagsasabi hindi kami mananalo. Naging barometer namin yung saying na yun," he added.
Bolick and Canlas finished with 18 points apiece as Donald Tankoua had another monster game against the Pirates with 15 points and 14 boards. JV Mocon also notched a double-double with 13 points and 10 boards as the Red Lions improved to 16-1 heading into their final game of the season.
Mike Nzeusseu had 16 points for the Pirates, who dropped to 15-3.
Reigning MVP CJ Perez was shackled by the San Beda defense, limited to nine points on just nine shot attempts.
