SAN Beda showed no signs of rust after a 17-day break, repulsing St. Benilde, 75-69 for its second win in the NCAA Season 94 men’s basketball tournament on Tuesday at Filoil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
Robert Bolick guided the Red Lions to the win as he exploded for 10 points in the fourth period, eight straight to capp off a 17-0 blast for a 69-54 lead with 5:21 left.
The Blazers still tried to make a fightback in the final minute as Unique Naboa’s three cut the deficit to four, 71-67 with 15.4 seconds remaining, but Franz Abuda was cool from the foul line to stave off the uprising.
Bolick had a career-best 25 points, 19 coming in the second half, making 4 of 6 shots from the 3-point line, while also collecting five rebounds and five assists.
“Again, Robert Bolick is Robert Bolick. Robert Bolick saved us tonight and at least all the other guys stepped up their games,” remarked coach Boyet Fernandez. “But still, it’s Robert Bolick.”
Javee Mocon had a double-double of 14 points and 12 rebounds, while Abuda got 12 and three.
San Beda bucked its sluggish start, where it fell behind by as much as 12, as the shots finally fell in the second half, draining seven of its 15 triples in the last two quarters.
“St. Benilde really played well today. Coach TY (Tang) really prepared for us and probably, the rustiness we had for not playing for two weeks showed in the first quarter. But our defense stepped up in the second up to the fourth,” said Fernandez.
Clement Leutcheu paced St. Benilde with 22 points and 11 rebounds as Carlo Young got 15 as the Blazers lost their second game in three outings.
