SAN Sebastian spoiled Arellano University's home stand with an impressive, 65-56, win in the NCAA Season 93 on Thursday at the Arellano Gym.
The Stags went on a 12-2 tear midway through the final quarter to create separation from the hosts for good.
Leading by just one, 49-48, with 8:16 left, the Stags got contributions from nearly everyone with Lorenzo Navarro and RK Ilagan draining three pointers to give the visitors a 61-50 lead with just 2:04 to go.
It didn't help that star guard Kent Salado went down with leg cramps.
Zach Nichols' three trimmed San Sebastian's lead to just five, 61-56, with 62 ticks left.
However, a Michael Calisaan basket and a disqualifying foul on Marwin Taywan for hitting ultimately sealed the fate of the Chiefs.
The victory moved the Stags to 1-1 after an opening day loss to San Beda while the Chiefs fell to the same record.
"We're doing the right thing. Alam naman namin na nalimit namin Arellano to 56 points, that's our target kasi dun naman talaga kami mananalo, sa defense talaga," said San Sebastian head coach Egay Macaraya.
"Disadvantage din talaga (playing away), pag humahabol sila iba yung intensity nila. Pero we still have to compete and amid the distractions," he added.
The Stags took a 24-8 lead in the first quarter to quickly silence the Arellano home crowd.
Salado willed the Chiefs back into the game but got little help to completely turn the tide around and steal the game away from the Stags.
"Yung lapses noon, the energy and the effort, pagod narin e. That is why mabilis ang substitutions ko ngayon. Yung nangyari sa San Beda was a lesson learned for us. We needed to finish hard," Macaraya added.
Calisaan overcame foul trouble to lead the Stags with 12 points and 13 rebounds. Allyn Bulanadi and JM Calma added 10 apiece while Ilagan finished with nine points and seven boards.
Salado was the only Chief in double digits with 15 points.
The victory moved the Stags to 1-1 after an opening day loss to San Beda while the Chiefs also fell to the same record after the loss.
