PERPETUAL Help has made it two straight wins after starting NCAA Season 93 with back-to-back losses, beating San Sebastian, 68-65, on Tuesday at the Filoil Flying V Center in San Juan.
GJ Ylagan made four big free throws down the stretch and one crucial defensive stop to steer the Altas to another gutsy victory.
After a disappointing start to the tournament with a jersey blunder that cost them a win, the Altas are back on track although this win didn't come easily, needing to fight off a gallant stand from the Stags.
The Stags had chances to either tie or take the lead in the final minute but could not convert, with Ryan Costelo, Allyn Bulanadi and RK Ilagan flubbing their shots.
San Sebastian got to within one, 65-66 with eight seconds left following an Allyn Bulanadi three pointer but Ylagan drained his final two free throws to push the lead back to three.
The veteran marksman then capped off his big night with a block on Bulanadi's three pointer at the buzzer.
"Kailangan ko lang i-shoot (yung free throws) kasi pag na-miss ko yun, may chance kaming matalo eh syempre ayaw kong matalo," said Ylagan.
"Kahit malayo si Bulanadi, alam ko siya yung titira kaya kahit nasa malayo ako, hinabol ko pa rin para at least ma-challenge ko yung tira niya, hindi siya makatira ng madali," he added.
Ylagan had a game high 15 points, hitting three of his four attempts from the foul line, Prince Eze notched a double-double with 12 points and 13 boards, while AJ Coronel scored 10.
Michael Calisaan scored 14 points and hauled down eight rebounds for the Stags, who absorbed their third loss in four outings.
