DEFENSE did it for Perpetual as it put an end to its three-game losing run with a 75-73 squeaker over Arellano on Tuesday in the NCAA Season 95 seniors basketball tournament at Filoil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
Edgar Charcos nailed the go-ahead floater with 3.4 seconds to spare before Kim Aurin stuffed Rence Alcoriza's potential game-winning three from the left corner as the Altas escaped with the tight win.
That was the biggest of Aurin's four blocks in the game, to go with his 17 points, eight rebounds, three assists and two steals.
Charcos scored six of his 15 points in the payoff period.
Ben Adamos got a double-double with his 16 points and 11 rebounds while making two rejections. He halted Kent Salado's drive in the final 11.5 seconds that brought the ball back to the Altas to set up the Charcos winner.
"Kahit we made crucial stops in the end, I still think this team needs to be smarter in playing defense," lamented coach Frankie Lim.
Justin Arana tied the game at 73 with a hook shot before stopping Tonton Peralta's drive in the final 31.8 seconds to bring the favor back to the Chiefs.
Perpetual ended its woes to rise to a 2-3 slate.
Arana paced Arellano (1-4) with 20 points, 10 rebounds and seven blocks, while Gelo Sablan had 13 points and five boards.
Salado was held to just 10 points after going scoreless in the first half, along with four assists and two rebounds as he had to deal with the hounding defense of Peralta all game long.
