PERPETUAL Help banked on its hot outside shooting late in the game as it avoided a monumental upset in the NCAA Season 94, scoring a 78-72 win over Jose Rizal University on Tuesday at the Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan.
Trailing by three, 72-69, following a Jed Mendoza-led Heavy Bombers rally, the Altas responded by firing three triples to escape with the win.
AJ Coronel tied the game with a three pointer at the 2:20 mark before rookie Jielo Razon converted back-to-back triples to finish off the Heavy Bombers.
The win pushed the Altas to a tie for third place with Letran with a 4-2 record as the Bombers dropped to 0-7.
"Wala pa kaming easy win but a win is a win. Even if we only had two turnovers, hindi ko alam kung ano nangyari," said Perpetual Help coach Frankie Lim.
"Our offense gives outside shooters the opportunity to get the open shot. Nasa kanila na kung paano nila gagamitin yun. Big shot for the rookie," he added.
Edgar Charcos led the Altas with 25 points, nine rebounds and five assists as Razon finished with 18 points, six boards and five assists. Coronel added 16 points and five rebounds.
Mendoza led the way for the Heavy Bombers with 21 points in the loss.
