NOT a few SPIN.ph readers took notice of the Letran gym and its fading flooring when the Knights hosted an 'NCAA on Tour' game last week against College of Saint Benilde which was carried on national television.
Well, if you're a Letran supporter, don't fret. Something big is bound to rise soon.
Letran officials assured that the school will be building a new gym in its Intramuros campus starting this year in commemoration of the school's 400-year anniversary in 2020.
Letran athletic director Fr. Vic Calvo said the current gym will be replaced by a four-storey facility that will include a new basketball court in one of the floors.
The project is similar to the one undertaken by University of Santo Tomas years ago when it built the Quadricentennial Pavilion which houses a state-of-the-art gym for the Growling Tigers.
"'Yung UST, nung nag-quadricentennial sila, nagkaroon sila ng Quadricentennial Pavilion. 'Yung Letran, 400 years sa 2020, ganun din ang gagawin. Parang Quadicentennial project," said Calvo.
Calvo said Letran is targeting the new gym to be built later this year, the earliest in October.
"Tataas 'yan, mga four floors at magiging high-tech. We are talking about a half-a-billion project," said Calvo.
Calvo, however, said the flooring of the current gym will be retained as a keepsake of the school's rich past in sports especially in basketball where the Knights have won 17 NCAA senior championships, the most recent in 2015.
The current basketball court will be transformed into an activity center once the new gym is finished.
"Totally gigibain pero ire-retain 'yung flooring for historical purposes," said Calvo.
