THE NCAA will now take a more lenient stand regarding cases of players seeing action in ‘ligang labas.’

Management Committee chairman Peter Cayco of host school Arellano said the league is now leaving it all up to member schools to castigate erring players caught violating the NCAA rule on playing in unsanctioned tournaments.

“Kasi nga ang nangyayari before, sususpendihin mo (yung player), ipo-forfeit namin yung games, ang tinatamaan buong team. Kasalanan ng isang player, the whole team suffers,” said Cayco during Tuesday’s Philippine Sportswriters Association (PSA) Forum at the Amelie Hotel-Manila.

“Pero ngayon kasalanan mo, ikaw lang ang magsa-suffer, hindi yung buong team.”

The 10 member schools however, should inform the NCAA body beforehand about their players who suited up in ‘ligang labas.' Otherwise, they also risk the prospect of being fined by the league, he added.

The schools are given two weeks before the start of the season to inform the NCAA about the matter, or at least prior to the Management Committee’s approval of all players’ eligibility.

“All they have to do is to inform the Management Committee that these players play in this league from this time to this date. So OK na yun, we will allow that,” said Cayco in the weekly session presented by San Miguel Corp., Braska Hotel, Amelie Hotel, and the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corp. (PAGCOR).

“If we allow it, wala ng suspension yan. Pag lumaro sila ng ligang labas without informing us, merong fine ang school diyan. So it’s the responsibility of the school to inform the NCAA.”

“So lookout na ng schools yan,” said Cayco. “We’re now more lenient and we have transferred the responsibility of monitoring and allowing (players) to member schools.”
