BARRING another suspension of the scheduled games due to bad weather, league-leading Lyceum looks to sustain its hot start in the NCAA Season 93 when it takes on a skidding Mapua side on Friday at the Filoil Flying V Center in San Juan.
Game time is at 2 p.m in the main serving of the triple-header, a day after the league postponed the NCAA on Tour game between San Sebastian and Jose Rizal University due to inclement weather brought upon by the Typhoon Gorio.
Emilio Aguinaldo College (2-2) will look for its second straight win when it takes on the revitalized Perpetual Help (1-2) in the curtain raiser at 12 p.m. as Arellano (2-2) battles College of St. Benilde (1-2) to wrap up the game day at 4 p.m.
The Pirates will once again be on the microscope after surviving a rough four-game schedule to open their campaign where they conquered San Beda, JRU, San Sebastian and Arellano.
But after proving its title credentials with an unbeaten start, Lyceum looks to take the next step in staying consistent and not stepping off the gas even against struggling foes like Mapua.
"We just need to make sure to always improve. Mahirap kasi na wala kang hinahabol, so your goal is to always better yourself, kasi in front of you wala eh," said Lyceum coach Topex Robinson.
"Ang kalaban namin palagi is ourselves. The way we're gonna manage our egos and our prides will really be key for us," he continued. "Always being humble, always knowing that we're just there because of the opportunities."
The youthful coach will now be looking out for any signs of complacency from his players, seeing that their label as one of the league heavyweights has been validated with their 4-0 card.
Robinson vows to keep his boys in check, and if needed be, he'll have no second thoughts in turning from a playful and loose coach to a tough and strict mentor.
"I just have to make sure, na as their leader, to take care of these guys. Kailangan medyo hindi malunod sa isang basong tubig," Robinson said.
"If you want to give them tough love, that's what we give them," he added.
His guards, led by the Marcelino twins JV and JC, will be put on the test when they face the veteran backcourt tandem of the Cardinals in Andoy Estrella and Leo Gabo.
Aside from that match-up, the Cardinals will be having a rough time matching up with the very versatile forwards of Lyceum composed of CJ Perez, MJ Ayaay and Reymar Caduyac.
Mapua coach Atoy Co understands that they'll be coming in as underdogs considering their lack of firepower, but hopes to see the same fight from their 65-62 loss to the Altas in every game
"Wala e, talagang kulang kami sa manpower eh. Pero sa pinapakita naman na laban, wala naman na akong hahanapin pa," he said.
