JUSTIN Gutang of College of St. Benilde ruled the NCAA Slam Dunk contest on Friday at the Filoil Flying V Arena, becoming the second Blazer in three years to win the tournament.
Gutang edged out Lyceum's Enoch Valdez and Arellano's William de Leon in an uneventful final round that saw the two players miss both of their attempts.
All Gutang had to do was throw down a dunk to win the whole thing and he did so with an emphatic tomahawk jam to finish it off and get a score of 41.
"I wasnt really satisfied. I wanted to put on a show on a show, I just didnt really have legs. I wasnt able to practice that much cause I feel like cramping but a win is a win," he added.
Gutang's best dunk came in the elimination round when he threw one down from the baseline off a Jimboy Pasturan feed on the sideboard.
"I saw the guys during warmups and they're dunking with two balls and I was like, oh my gosh they’re dunking two balls, I had to do something," said Gutang.
Other participants include Ken Villapando of San Sebastian, Jesper Bautista of Mapua, Jeric Villanueva of Letran, Eugene Toba of San Beda, Pereptual's Lean Martel and EAC's Juju Bautista.
