MICHAEL 'Macky' Cariño has been named interim head coach of the five-peat seeking Perpetual Altas men’s volleyball team ahead of NCAA Season 100 in February.

The long-time Altas deputy of 15 years was appointed by school chairman Antonio Tamayo to succeed Sammy Acaylar, who passed away on Jan. 30 due to cardiac arrest.

“It’s an honor to be a successor of coach Sammy and of course, we will do our very best to continue the legacy and me as the men’s team coach of this season,” Cariño said.
The job will be nothing new for Cariño as he was once chosen by Acaylar to take his place as Altas head coach when the late mentor became the school’s executive director for volleyball in 2017.
As his longtime protégé, Cariño looks to uphold Acaylar’s title-winning legacy. The tournament will start in two weeks with the Altas, led by Louie Ramirez, aiming to win the school’s fifth straight men's volleyball championship and 15th overall

The NCAA’s centennial season will be much longer than in previous years with a double-round robin format in the elimination round.
“I will strive harder just to get our goal — to become a champion,” the incoming Altas coach said.
