MAPUA came alive in the third quarter before cruising to a comfortable win over San Sebastian, 95-79, last Wednesday at the Filoil Ecooil Center to stay in the hunt for the top seed in the NCAA Season 100.
JC Recto powered that third quarter surge for the Cardinals as they led by as many as 32 points entering the payoff period to keep in step with the league-leading St. Benilde Blazers atop the standings with a 14-3 record.
Recto scored 13 of his 17 points in the second quarter, while Yam Concepcion chipped in 18 points, five rebounds and five assists for the Cardinals.
Super rookie Chris Hubilla also had himself another all-around performance after finishing with 17 points, six rebounds, four assists, while adding a steal and a block apiece.
“Lahat talaga pinaghahandaan namin. Dito kami huhugot ng lakas papuntang semifinals, sa mga natitira naming games kung pano namin mahahandle ang pressure at paano pa kami mabubuo pa,” Hubilla said.
“Yun nga, sabi ng coaches wag lang papakampante sa mga natitira naming game, seryoso talaga pinaghahandaan namin.”
It was another disappointing outing for the Stags who gave 36 points in that pivotal third quarter that took the fight out of them long before the final buzzer sounded.
Paeng Are led the way for the Stags with 22 points while Tristan Felebrico added a monster double-double of 13 points and 15 rebounds in a losing effort as they dropped to 5-12.
