MAPUA foiled Arellano’s repeated rallies to post a 91-83 wire-to-wire victory in the NCAA Season 94 on Tuesday at the Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan.
The Cardinals took control from the get go before banking on the steady hands of Cedric Pelayo at crunchtime as they snapped their two-game skid and improved to 2-2.
Leading by as many as 16 points in the third period, the Cardinals saw that trimmed to five points as Levi dela Cruz and Archie Concepcion fueled the Chiefs' late fightback.
Pelayo had nine in the fourth period including a jumper with 2:15 left to give the Cardinals an 87-80 lead.
"After ng talo last game, nag-double effort kami para tumaas yung intensity namin," said veteran guard Laurenz Victoria.
"Sinabi ko sa mga teammates ko stay composed lang. Pag sinabayan namin sila, masisira laro namin," he added.
Christian Bunag led the way for the Cardinals with 16 points and 10 boards while Eric Jabel added 15.
Pelayo finished with 13, Noah Lugo and Warren Bonifacio had 12 apiece while Victoria finished with nine points and nine assists.
De la Cruz led the Chiefs with 25 points as Ian Alban added 12 for the now 2-2 Chiefs.
