HOPEFULLY, Manny Pacquiao would be to Letran what Manny V. Pangilinan is to San Beda in the NCAA.
The boxing superstar has expressed his all-out support to the Knights in his capacity as team manager, saying he wants to see the Intramuros-based squad reclaim lost glory in the country's oldest collegiate league.
“My role is to support the team,” he said during the turnover of his sports memorabilia to the Philippine Sports Museum at the Philsports Arena on Friday.
“Makatulong ako sa kanila, suporta financially ‘yung team (para) mag-champion,” he added.
On Friday night, he hosted a dinner for the entire team at his Forbes home after the Knights' 78-62 victory over Jose Rizal University.
The 36-year-old congressman from the province of Sarangani was named Letran team manager last Wednesday, raising hope that the Knights will start contending for the title again in the same manner the Red Lions started winning championships when they finally found a generous backer in Pangilinan.
Letran last won a title in 2005 under coach Louie Alas. It reached the Finals in 2012 and 2013, respectively, only to lose to five-time champion Red Lions on both occasions.
With him as backer, Pacquiao said he will help Letran in its recruiting program.
“Yes, naghahanap na tayo, nagi-scout na tayo ng mga magagaling na players na pwede na (lumaro next season),” he said.
Pacquiao, however, has only one demand from the Knights.
“Galingan lang nila. Andito lang ako palagi para sa kanila, naka-suporta,” he said.
