LYCEUM completed a first-round sweep of the NCAA Season 94 by outlasting San Beda in another thriller 73-66, on Tuesday at the Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan.
The Pirates got big buckets from Nino Ibanez and CJ Perez as they ended the game on a 9-2 run to give the Red Lions their first defeat of the tournament.
A three-pointer by Ibanez with 1:26 left gave the Pirates a 67-64 lead, after an AC Soberano three tied the game.
Soberano kept the Red Lions in the game by hitting two foul shots but Perez's three pointer with 28 seconds to go gave the Pirates a 70-66 lead to put the game away.
"It is just fitting that what worked for us was what our pre game talk was about. It's about who we are playing for. We are not playing the competition but we are playing for ourselves," said Lyceum coach Topex Robinson.
"We know what San Beda could do and that it's going to be something that people are watching. We want to imprint our name and our school in that league where people watch our games. That's really big for us," he added.
Perez scored 18 of his game high 22 points in the second half and had 13 rebounds, three assists and two steals.
JC Marcelino had 13 points off the bench as Spencer Pretta added 11 points.
Donald Tankoua scored 19 points and 18 rebounds as Robert Bolick finished with 18 as they dropped to 7-1.
