AFTER a disappointing NCAA Season 101 campaign, the men's basketball program of Lyceum University of the Philippines is moving on to a different direction.
Multiple sources told SPIN.ph on Friday morning that the Pirates have relieved Gilbert Malabanan of his head coaching duties.
It's unclear if the former PBA player was fired or simply not offered an extension after carding a 3-10 won-lost record in the elimination round of the tournament before getting crushed by San Beda, 91-87, in a one-sided quarterfinals match.
Several attempts to reach Malabanan were unsuccessful. The school, meanwhile, has begun the search for a replacement and has conducted unofficial talks with a few prospects, sources said.
An assistant at Lyceum in 2018, Malabanan, who played for Ginebra and San Miguel in the PBA, was elevated to the head-coaching position in 2021.
The 46-year old Perpetual alum led the Pirates to three Final Four appearances from 2022 to 2024.
