HEARTBREAK kids no more.
After going winless in its first five games, marred by three heartbreaking overtime losses, Lyceum finally scored a breakthrough win in the NCAA Season 101 after a pulsating 78-76 win over Jose Rizal University on Tuesday at the Playtime Filoil Center.
Jonathan Daileg hit a big three-pointer which pushed the Pirates to a 77-71 lead before surviving a late-game scare from the Heavy Bombers courtesy of Shawn Argente who bunched five points in a span of seconds to trim the Lyceum lead to just one, 77-76 with 2.7 seconds remaining.
Daileg split his free throws, but with JRU without a time, Argente’s hail mary from near the opposite end of the court wasn’t answered, giving the Pirates the victory in a nailbiter this time.
“I thank God for this win and also the players and my coaches who worked really hard to get this first win. I give credit to them and of course, it's a first win so we're happy,” coach Gilbert Malabanan said.
Ato Barba led the way for the Pirates with 15 points and six rebounds while Renz Villegas added 14 points, six rebounds and five assists for the now 1-5 Pirates.
Shawn Argente led the way for the Heavy Bombers with 26 points but it wasn't enough as they fell to their second straight loss to drop to 3-4.
