LYCEUM of the Philippines needed an extra period to complete its comeback and frustrate Arellano University, 90-86, in the NCAA Season 100 men’s basketball tournament on Friday at the FilOil EcoOil Arena in San Juan.
The Pirates went to the 1-2 punch of Ato Barba and McLaude Guadana in overtime to pull off the victory and dealt the Chiefs another heartbreaking loss.
Barba fired five straight points including a clutch three pointer that put the Pirates on top for good, 84-82, before Guadana hit back-to-back baskets in the final 30 seconds for the marginal score.
Coming off a career-best the previous game, Barba continued to wax hot as he finished with 25 points for the host school and added eight rebounds, while Gyle Montano added 17 and Guadana with 12.
It was the second straight win for Lyceum to reach the .500 mark at 2-2.
The loss kept Arellano still winless in four outings as it suffered another loss in overtime.
But the Chiefs had nothing but to blame themselves after failing to protect a 63-52 lead late in the third quarter.
Arellano actually still led, 76-67 with 3:14 left in regulation, before Lyceum led by Barba, Montano, and Guadana instigated a 12-3 closing run to forge the overtime play.
Maverick Binoya paced the Chiefs with 22 points, Troy Valencia added 18, even as Jeadab Ongotan submitted a double-double of 13 points and 11 rebounds.
What badly hurt Arellano was its 10-of-23 shooting from the foul line including two each by Valencia and Binoya late in regulation that could have won it for the team.
Arellano coach Chico Manabat was furious after the game and walked over to the technical committee side complaining about the non-travelling call on Guadana in the Pirates’ final possession in overtime.
