AFTER a big win in its first game, Lyceum now braces for a bigger test in an early match-up with reigning champ San Beda in the NCAA Season 93 seniors basketball tournament at the Filoil Flying V Centre.
The Pirates face off with the Red Lions on Friday in what's touted as a possible finals preview following both teams' impressive performance in the preseason.
"When I was looking at the schedule," LPU coach Topex Robinson said, "Sabi ko nga, whether we like it or not, we are going to face them anyway. There is no controlling that."
Robinson sees the early test with San Beda as a positive thing as he will be gauge the progress of the Pirates.
"It's a good training ground for us. We know that they are a good team and a well-coached team. Hopefully, we could just give our best and we have a peace of mind that we gave our best kung saan man kami abutin," he said.
The Pirates made an auspicious debut in Season 93 as they overwhelmed Jose Rizal University, 96-75, behind the solid Lyceum debut of CJ Perez (22 points, 10 rebounds, four assists, two steals).
Robinson, though, remained cautious despite the Pirates lopsided win, even leading the Heavy Bombers by as much as 30 points in the game, as he pointed to the team's 21 turnovers.
Such sloppy play is unacceptable against a team like San Beda, said the Lyceum coach.
"We always try that whenever we play, we always think about playing San Beda. Against San Beda, those turnovers will mean a lot to us. Whoever we play, we always think about upping our level. Mahirap 'yung linalaro mo 'yung laro ng kalaban," Robinson said.
"We want to honor the game by giving our best. We want to inspire others and that's important. We should not relax and celebrate, you have to give your best," he added.
