A VENGEFUL Letran squad showed up and eliminated a listless Mapua squad, getting back at its neighbors with an 88-79 victory in the NCAA Season 93 on Friday at the Filoil Flying V Center.
The win was the perfect response to their first meeting where the Cardinals shocked the Knights, 78-75, via an Andoy Estrella three-pointer.
But the most important in their second straight win is that the Knights are once again tied with the JRU Heavy Bombers at third and fourth place with 7-6 records.
The Cardinals on the hand became the first team to face the axe as they dropped their 12th straight loss after that shocker in their opener.
Rey Nambatac fired in 11 of his 25 points in the second quarter where the Knights outscored the Cardinals 26-7 to open their biggest lead of the night at halftime, 47-25.
The Cardinals tried to make a game out of it, trimming the lead down to seven in the fourth, but that came a little too late as Quinto and Jerrick Balanza drained big baskets to keep the Knights on top.
“Nagtrabaho talaga sila. We execute our game plan. Magandang bwelo para sa amin going to Tuesday’s game,” said Letran head coach Jeff Napa who’s already bracing squad for a tough grind against the fifth-running San Sebastian squad.
“Maganda ang depensa. Na-execute yung game plan namin nung second quarter kaya naging madali sa amin ang opensa namin,” he added.
Quinto also had a solid game for the Knights as he finished with 22 points, eight rebounds and three assists. Balanza added 14 points, six rebounds and three steals as JP Calvo was steady as always with 13 points.
Christian Bunag continued his stellar play for the Cardinals as he finished with 23 points and 12 rebounds while Leo Gabo added 15 points and five boards.
