KENT Salado atoned for two missed free throws in regulation with the game winning basket in overtime as Arellano University hacked out a gutsy 73-72 victory over Jose Rizal University in the NCAA Season 93 on Tuesday at the Filoil Flying V Center in San Juan.
The Chiefs guard nailed a floater over the outstretched arms of Abdoul Poutouchi with 0.2 seconds left to propel the Chiefs to their second win in three games.
Trailing by one with four seconds to go, Salado left Gio Lasquety in the dust before challenging the 6’8 Poutouchi and scoring the floater which hit the glass before finding the bottom of the net.
His heroics came after missing two free throws with 9.8 seconds left in regulation, allowing the Heavy Bombers to send the game into extension with a three pointer from Jed Mendoza.
“I don’t know how to describe it. Grabe yung game, character build up din samin kasi yung trust e, nabubuild up yung trust namin nung isa’t isa,” said Arellano head coach Jerry Codinera.
“We had to go to Salado. And we were able to execute. We trust Salado, binigay namin sa kanya and he made that crucial basket,” he added.
The Chiefs looked like they were about to lose the game in overtime with Mendoza scoring the Heavy Bombers’ final six points. The second year guard tied the game at 71 with 35 seconds left in the match before splitting his charities to give JRU the lead with four seconds to go.
That only set the up Salado’s grand return and the pride of Cagayan de Oro redeemed himself with the game-winner.
Salado finished with a game high 25 points, eight assists and six rebounds to lead the Chiefs back into winning track after a loss to San Sebastian on their home floor last Thursday.
Zach Nichols kept the Chiefs afloat in the overtime as he got out of his shooting slump to finish with 13 points anchored on three triples. Lervin Flores had 15 rebounds to go along with seven markers.
MJ Dela Virgen and Tey Teodoro had 15 points apiece for the Heavy Bombers, who fell to 1-2.
