It turns out, Jayvee made a bone-headed decision days prior that cost him the crucial tiff.
The defensive-minded JV shared that his emotions boiled over during Friday’s practice session that led to him hurting his right foot
"Nung nagtre-training kami, na-frustrate ako. Hindi ako makadepensa at puro ako turnover. Wala akong maisip dahil sa sobrang frustrated ko, nasipa ko yung semento. Pagkasipa ko, namaga. Hindi na ako makadepensa at hindi ako makatira," he said. "Nagawa ko lang naman yun dahil sa emotions ko."
That lapse in judgment kept Marcelino sitting on the bench on Monday as the Pirates missed his averages of 6.3 points, 3.2 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 1.2 steals, but more importantly, his hounding on-ball defense against his Red Lion counterparts led by Robert Bolick.
Helpless, he could only watch as Lyceum fell anew to San Beda, 71-56, and once again, wound up as bridesmaids for the second consecutive year.
"Sobrang sakit. Pinapanood ko sila pero wala akong magawa para mahabol yung kalaban o kaya maka-depensa man lang ako," he rued. "Syempre masakit yun bilang player dahil gusto mong makatulong lagi sa mga teammates mo."
Marcelino, though, heeded coach Topex Robinson's reminders to move on from this defeat, especially that he and twin Jaycee will be counted on as the seniors to lead the Pirates' campaign come Season 95.
"Sobrang lesson learned sa amin ito. Dalawang championship na kami na natalo at wala pa kaming panalo. Siguro mas paghahandaan pa namin ang games namin. Lahat ng kalaban namin, iisipin namin na mas malaki sila," he said.
