JOSE Rizal University entered the second round of the NCAA Season 93 with a bang after clobbering Mapua, 68-59, on Friday at the Filoil Flying V Center.
The win was the Heavy Bombers' fourth straight after an inconsistent start to finish the first round at solo third with a 6-3 record.
Rookie Aaron Bordon turned out to be the newest discovery of coach Vergel Meneses as he scored a career-best 17 points, including six in the fourth where they broke the game wide open.
His basket gave the Heavy Bombers the biggest lead at 64-45, halfway through the final period. The Cardinals managed to cut the lead to within seven near the final two minutes but the Heavy Bombers had enough of a buffer to get the comfortable victory.
That finish, however, left Meneses wanting for more as they allowed the Cardinals to gain momentum in the end.
"A win is a win but the way we play, I'm not happy about it. They thought they can easily win against Mapua. Mapua gave them a hard time," said Meneses.
'"We had three turnovers on that stretch, that’s why they got back. It’s a good thing that we converted after the turnovers and we made a shot," he added.
Jed Mendoza finished with 12 points as Ervin Grospe and MJ Dela Virgen added 11 markers apiece for the Bombers who missed the services of Gio Lasquety and played Tey Teodoro in limited minutes.
Teodoro rode the JRU bench in the final minutes as he played just a total of 13 to finish with seven points.
The Cardinals, playing just eight players, dropped their eighth straight game and ended the first round at rock bottom with a 1-8 record.
Christian Bunag had another huge double-double with 15 points and 21 boards for Mapua.
