WANTING to pay tribute to his seniors in the final game of the eliminations, San Beda head coach Boyet Fernandez may have gotten an extra weapon heading into their finals rematch against Lyceum.
Senior guard Jeramer Cabanag reminded Fernandez just how good he really is, playing big on ‘Seniors night’ before playing an integral role in the semis for the Red Lions.
Averaging just 2.4 points on just seven minutes in the first 17 games, Cabanag’s numbers zoomed to nearly 19 minutes in the final two games for the Red Lions, and he’s made the most out of it.
In the two games, Cabanag posted averages of 12.5 points, 4.5 rebounds and a steal to ease off the pressure on Robert Bolick on the guard position.
The 5-foot-9 point guard is just making the most out of the opportunities.
“Siguro sa akin, ginawa ko lang yung part ko. Sinuklian ko lang yung tiwala na binigay ni coach sa akin. Last year na namin kaya kailangan talaga namin maglaro para ma-inspire yung mga rookies namin. At least may maiiwan kami sa San Beda,” Cabanag said.
What makes Cabanag stand out for Fernandez is his work ethic and how he keeps grinding despite the limited minutes, as he’s playing behind star guard Robert Bolick.
“I was the one who recruited him from Bacolod and I do believe in his talent. Kaso after ng residency niya, naangat naman ako sa kabilang liga. When I came back, he was in the reserve kaya I really made it a point to put him in my lineup,” Fernandez said.
“Even though he has a little bit of problem with playing time because he is playing alongside Bolick, you really have to appreciate his work ethic. He still comes in sa practice and takes his shots. And that's the product of what he has been doing,” he added.
“Nahihiya nga ako, humihingi nga ako ng dispensa but at least you saw how he plays if he is given an opportunity. He played well.”
Cabanag’s performances over the past few games didn’t just earn him praises from his coach, it also earned him some great words from Bolick who believes that he’s gonna be an asset against Lyceum.
“Gusto kong i-congratulate si Jeramer, he really played well, two games na, hindi siya nagiagamit, pero yung positivity niya andun palagi,” Bolick said. Magaling naman talaga siyang player, control niya sarili niya, he’s picking his spots, I hope magtuloy-tuloy siya sa Finals. Makakatulong siya sa team namin.”
