SAN Beda fought off a gallant stand from Arellano University before breaking away in the endgame to take an 83-72 win in the NCAA Season 93 on Thursday at the Filoil Flying V Center in San Juan.
AC Soberano and Jeramer Cabanag conspired in a 9-0 blast midway through the fourth period to hold off the Chiefs, who fared better in this game than what they showed in the first round when they were blown out 95-70.
Leading by just four, 67-63, the reserve duo tore the game wide open by scoring nine straight points, with Cabanag capping that run with a beautiful pump fake over two Arellano defenders to open a 76-63 lead with 5:31 left.
The win was San Beda's 12th straight win to improve to 13-1.
"Unang-una, I give credit to Coach Jerry and Arellano, they really prepared for us this day It's really our individual defense that worries me today," said San Beda head coach Boyet Fernandez.
"As what I've always said to my players, we only have to take good care of ourselves. We cannot pray for other teams to lose, other teams to win. All we have to do is take care of ourselves and win our games," he added.
Cabanag scored a career best 14 points for the Red Lions in just 15 minutes of action.
Javee Mocon also finished with 14 points, with seven rebounds and five assists while Robert Bolick also had an all-around game with 13 points, eight assists and seven rebounds.
Kent Salado paced the Chiefs with 17 points as Kraniel Villoria and Michael Canete added 15 points apiece for the Chiefs whose final four hopes are slowly flickering with a 5-9 record.
