Jeff Napa back in Letran as Knights' team consultant

    Nov 22, 2019

JEFF Napa just can't stay away from Letran for far too long.

The former Knights coach has been officially appointed as a team consultant, marking his return to Muralla.

SMC sports director and Letran special assistant to the rector for sports development Alfrancis Chua made the appointment official as the Knights celebrated their success in the NCAA Season 95 seniors basketball tournament.

Napa was one of the voices who aided coach Bonnie Tan and Letran in toppling the mighty San Beda in the Finals to win the schools' 18th title and its first since 2015.

"Malaking tulong si coach Jeff sa amin dito sa championship na ito, lalo na sa players. Siya ang bumuo ng team na ito at nakikinig talaga yung players sa kanya," said the soft-spoken Tan.

The 38-year-old Napa was at the helm for the Knights program for three years, laying the foundation for a championship team as he brought in talents like Larry Muyang, Fran Yu, and Bonbon Batiller to compliment the holdovers led by Jerrick Balanza.

Although he was not renewed this past season, with Letran opting to install Tan at the head coaching position, he remained as a big presence in the development of the players and eventually, joined in the team practices since the start of the stepladder semis.

And this recent development only humbles him.

"Masaya ako sa tiwalang binigay sa akin ni boss Al, coach Bonnie (Tan), boss Waiyip (Chong), at ng buong team. Hindi sila nag-dalawang isip na ibalik ako sa team kaya thankful ako kay boss Al at sa Letran," said Napa, a three-time UAAP juniors champion with the NU Bullpups.

He will work closely with Tan, as well as the coaching staff, which includes Rensy Bajar, LA Tenorio, Lou Gatumbato, and Raymund Tiongco, once the Knights buckle down their preparation for back-to-back title drives come NCAA Season 96.
