JERRICK Balanza has been sensational for Letran in the early goings of the NCAA Season 95 seniors basketball tournament.
But for coach Bonnie Tan, he knows that it's not enough as he needs another veteran presence to step up for the Knights.
Bonbon Batiller heard that call loud and clear.
Scoring just four points in Letran's first two games, the Sarangani native had his breakout on Tuesday when he poured 14 points, four rebounds, and four assists in its 55-43 win over JRU.
"Yun lang ang good part na nangyari sa game, nag-step up si Bonbon," said Tan. "Definitely itong season na ito, kakailanganin namin ang isang veteran like him."
Batiller playing this way should already be a cause for celebration for the Knights, especially with the 6-foot guard dealing with a right shoulder injury during the summer.
"Galing ako sa opera sa injury kaya yung first two games, ang hirap mag-adjust kasi kahit tune-up wala akong nalaro," he said.
"Pero ngayon, medyo ok na yung pakiramdam ko at nakuha ko na rin yung kumpyansa ko."
That's why now, Batiller is looking to be consistent in his role for Letran, as well as rising to Tan's challenge.
"Talagang yung mga leaders, china-challenge ni coach at alam namin na talagang kailangan naming mag-step up ni Jerrick," he said.
"Gagawin ko ang lahat para maabot ko yung expectation niya sa akin para makatulong ako sa team as a leader at senior ng team. Kailangan kong abutin yung gusto niyang mangyari."
Letran carries a 2-1 card and return to action on Friday against Perpetual.
