EVAN Nelle's near-record-setting performance guided San Beda to back-to-back wins in the NCAA Season 95 seniors basketball tournament, downing Jose Rizal University, 74-52, Friday at Filoil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
The sophomore playmaker made up for his 2-of-8 shooting from the field as he dished out 14 assists, to go with his five points, three rebounds, and three steals in the victory.
Nelle's assist mark was two dimes shy of the record held by Jio Jalalon's 16 back in July 24, 2015 in Arellano's 104-92 win over San Sebastian.
Coach Boyet Fernandez, though, was far from happy, especially with how San Beda played flat in the second half.
"We thought na yung 11 assists niya nung first half will be record-breaking na, but three assists na lang siya nung second half. We were missing shots," said the four-time NCAA champion coach.
The Red Lions were ruthless from the get-go, with Calvin Oftana guiding their 15-0 start to set the tone for the rout, with the Heavy Bombers only getting their first bucket at the 3:46 mark of the opening canto.
The lead swelled to as much as 25, 71-46, with a jumper from Nelle in the fourth period.
Oftana topscored for San Beda with 17 points, 10 rebounds, and two blocks, while James Canlas added 17 points and eight boards.
JB Bahio also got 11 points and four rebounds in the triumph to go up the standings at 2-0.
"We are happy to win this one, but I saw a different thing in our execution. We have so many missed shots and we messed up our defense," said Fernandez, with the Red Lions only shooting 39-percent from the field.
Marwin Dionisio paced JRU with 13 points, six rebounds, and three assists as the Kalentong-based dribblers remained winless through two games.
Ry dela Rosa added 11 points and four boards, as Thomas Vasquez got nine.
