JETHRO Mendoza came up big in the endgame as Emilio Aguinaldo College pulled off the biggest shocker of the young NCAA season, stunning Lyceum, 84-82, Friday at Filoil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
The dead-shot sniper fired eight points in the final 3:24, including the go-ahead layup with 1.5 seconds remaining to lift the Generals to their first win over the Pirates since 2016.
Mendoza lit up for 21 points built on six triples, to go with four rebounds and two assists to level EAC's standing at 1-1.
Marwin Taywan also added 21 points, five assists, three rebounds, and two steals, as he had the game-winning dime to Mendoza to lock up the upset.
Lyceum still had a chance to tie the game, but EAC snuffed Reymar Caduyac's alley-oop play to Jayvee Marcelino to secure the win.
"Of course, morale-booster," said coach Oliver Bunyi, who scored his first win as an NCAA head coach.
Kyle Carlos added 11 points, while JP Maguliano registered 10 points, 15 rebounds, and two dimes for the Generals.
EAC stunned Lyceum with a super 24-7 third quarter blast to grab a 64-46 lead, but the Pirates would scrap their way back, using a 31-12 stretch to grab a 77-6 lead with 3:34 remaining in the fourth.
But that only set the stage for Mendoza's heroics late as the senior guard scored the last eight points for the Generals.
"Just as I said before, maglaro lang sila ng tama, may chance kami manalo sa big teams. Against LPU, we know how scrappy they are. Yun yung dream namin, to be as scrappy as them," said Bunyi.
Jaycee Marcelino carried Lyceum with 23 points, six rebounds, and four assists, while Caduyac had 17 points and four boards to fall to a 1-1 slate.
