COLLEGE of St. Benilde took its winning streak to four by dealing Arellano its third straight loss after a 94-82 win in their cross-group match-up in the NCAA Season 102 on Friday at the Philsports Arena in Pasig City.
Jhommel Ancheta stuffed the stat sheet with 18 points, four assists, two rebounds, and two steals, while Justine Sanchez also tallied 17 markers, eight boards, five dimes, and one block.
“Nung first half kasi slow start kami. So, nagusap-usap kami and yung sinabi nila coach [Pao Layug] yung pagkakamali and weaknesses namin,” said Ancheta.
“So nung second half, nag re-focus lang kami and yun nga nacontrol namin yung rebounds, and nahandle namin yung pressure nila,” he added.
It was a tightly contested affair in the first half, with the Blazers doing a good job of limiting T-Mc Ongotan to just two points.
Still, Basti Valencia and Leyton Buenaventura took over for the Chiefs, scoring 11 and 10 points, respectively, to give Arellano a 48-42 lead at the break.
The Blazers, however, unleashed a 31-point explosion in the third quarter to take a three-point lead heading into the final canto.
Benilde carried that momentum into the fourth, with Justine Sanchez knocking down a triple to stretch its lead to 14 points. From there, the Blazers never looked back and cruised to the win.
Sj Moore provided some spark off the bench adding 12 points, five rebounds, and three assists while Zenric Jarque registered 12 markers and two boards.
“Actually the last 4-5 games in a row we were down in the halftime. So I told them ‘you know what to do, you just have to clean up our mistakes,’ and I think the boys responded well in the halftime,” said Benilde head coach Pao Layug.
For Arellano, Valencia wound up 17 points, three rebounds, one assist, and a steal while, Ongotan finished with 14 markers, four dimes, and two steals.
