IN the hope of turning its fortunes around, College of St. Benilde players went into the Mapua game with quite a bold statement.

In a show of solidarity in the wake of consecutive losses that included a 43-point beatdown at the hands of the Lyceum Pirates, the Blazers showed up for their sixth match in the NCAA Season 93 with similar bald hairstyle.

What followed wa their first on-court victory -a 74-69 win over the Cardinals last Tuesday at the Filoil Flying V Center that came like rain in mid-summer for rookie coach TY Tang.

Tang said it was the idea of his players to sport the same hairstyle.

“Nagulat din ako. I was coming in sa practice and I didn’t know anything about it. They just had the commitment. Maybe it’s a symbol of unity and character in terms of building themselves, playing and building together whatever happens,” said Tang.

“Not all players does that. But they are willing to sacrifice everything just for the common goal and that’s to start winning games,” continued Tang, whose previous win as Benilde coach came on a technicality after Perpetual was penalized for wearing the wrong uniform.

“Hopefully this will be a morale booster for us, in terms of character that no matter what happens, down 40, down 20, up by one up by 20, we’ll finish the game with a lot of attitude and pride.”

JJ Domingo, the hero in that win, credited his team captain Gerard Castor for that initiative.

Domingo shared that the idea was hatched after that embarrassing loss to the Pirates, saying the players want to show that they're willing to rally around each other.

“Yung team captain namin si Gerard, talagang siya 'yung andyan e. Napagusapan namin yun, sinabi niya, 'Guys, kung manalo tayo sa Letran game di tayo papakalbo, kung matalo naman lahat tayo papakalbo,'” shared Domingo.

“Actually pinagalitan pa niya ako, kasi mali yung sa akin, pinatakbo pa niya ako sa training. Dun mo makikita yung leadership ni Castor sa loob at sa labas ng court. Kami nirererspeto namin siya. Kaya lahat kami ginawa namin yun.”

Asked if he and his coaching staff are willing to do the same, former La Salle star Tang said he'd leave any hairstyle statements to assistant coaches Siot Tanquingcen and Ali Peek, who are, incidentally, both bald.

“Sa kanila nalang,” said Tang laughing. “Siguro si coach Ali at coach Siot pwede.”
