CAUGHT in a tight battle against a hard-fighting San Sebastian side, San Beda head coach Boyet Fernandez had to dig deep into the bench to match the Stags’ intensity.
He had exactly the right in person in mind.
Fernandez opted to go with transferee Clint Doliguez and the NCAA newcomer definitely delivered by scoring six of the next 13 points for San Beda- the last a lay-up that opened a 68-62 lead.
“Clint Doliguez came in. I don’t really know how many points he scored, but he played good defense, made some steals, to bring back that energy we had,” said Fernandez.
This isn’t really the first time Doliguez showed flashes of brilliance off the bench since joining San Beda from Ateneo. He’s been doing it since the preseason for his new team.
Against Jose Rizal University in the quarterfinals of the Filoil Preseason Cup, Doliguez also proved to be a spark off the bench to fend off the Heavy Bombers.
In the finals against La Salle, Doliguez scored eight points in the final quarter, including big threes down the stretch to help San Beda complete a sweep of the preseason tournament.
So Fernandez knew exactly whose number to call in such a situation.
“He’s always been stepping up for us. He came in against jRU in the Filoil, he won the ball game. He stepped up in the game against La Salle, we won the ball game,” Fernandez recalled.
“That’s why in the fourth, I saw it was a seesaw battle, I really had to have bring out one of my guys.”
