THE Lyceum Pirates managed to keep its unbeaten run going and CJ Perez has sustained his fine play, again earning the vote as NCAA Press Corps Chooks-to-Go Player of the Week.
The Pirates scored two big wins this week, with Perez averaging 20.5 points, 8.5 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 2.5 steals.
Perez was picked over teammate MJ Ayaay, Bong Quinto of the Letran Knights, and Laurenz Victoria of the Mapua Cardinals by writers covering the league.
Perez notched a career-high 28 points while also adding 10 rebounds in a thrilling 78-73 victory over the Stags to keep their record perfect at 15-0.
“Kailangan talagang pagtrabahuhan mga ganitong bagay. Siguro lucky lang talaga ako today, maganda gising ko kaya ganun,” Perez humbly shared about his performance.
Perez had nine points in the pivotal fourth period to hold off the gritty Stags. The versatile forward was also instrumental on the defensive end, racking up four steals and one rejection, while guarding the Stags’ formidable frontline.
“I appreciate how we fought,” LPU coach Topex Robinson beamed. “We just stood our ground.”
Perez and the Pirates are now three wins away from a sweep and an automatic finals berth.
“Happy thoughts. Ganun lang palagi. Yung mga pinaguusapan namin sa loob,” Perez said about their attitude on the floor. “Focus lang sa sarili namin, saka enjoy lang talaga namin every game kahit down na, enjoy pa rin.”
The Pirates’ 15-0 record is the second-best start in NCAA history, behind the San Beda Red Lions’ 18-0 run in Season 86.
