CHOLO Martin is set to be named the new Arellano coach heading into NCAA Season 95 where the Chiefs are set to host for the first time.

Arellano University Management Committee (Mancomm) representative Peter Cayco confirmed the signing on Tuesday.

Not many know that Martin previously handled Arellano in the 80s immediately after his years as a collegiate player for San Beda. He then had a brief stint as a head coach in the PBA for Galerie Dominique Artists back in 1983.

Martin will be taking over the reins from interim head coach Junjie Ablan who stepped in after four-year head coach Jerry Codinera stepped down midway through the season.

“Nagkaroon ng deliberation within Arellano, nag-shortlist kami. Out of the five names, the most number of endorsements was for Cholo Martin,” said Cayco.

“Kahapon, Cholo met the team. Team A and B. We gave him enough time to finish this season. Right after the final game, Arellano na siya. Napaalam ko na rin siya sa San Beda kanina and they are happy for him. At least, may team na siya hawak na kanya,” he added.

Martin is currently the head coach of the Pasay Voyagers in the MPBL but perhaps the biggest thing that he’ll be bringing in is the winning culture from all those years coaching as an assistant for San Beda.

He’s been with San Beda for the last five years, having been an assistant since Boyet Fernandez took over in 2013, winning four championships in the process – including one with Jamike Jarin.

He was also a part of Fernandez’ assistants when the now-defunct Sta. Lucia Realtors won a PBA Championship.

“Masakit pero it’s an opportunity. That is why I always give my assistants an opportunity to integrate into the system para hindi sila maging stagnant,” said Boyet Fernandez.

“I’m sad seeing him go, but I’m happy for him,” he added.

Martin will be bringing in youth as his primary assistants as he’ll be tapping the services of Yvan Ludovice and JP Belencion, two of his players in the Voyagers.

Both Ludovice and Belencion are homegrown NCAA talent, playing for rivals San Beda and Letran respectively.

Expectations are certainly heightened as the Chiefs are set to host for the first time but Cayco insists that he doesn’t want to add pressure to Martin.

All he asks is a respectable performance.

“Not to add pressure sinabi na namin kay Cholo to start early kasi nakakahiya naman kung host ka number 10 ka. No pressure na mag champion or what, just put up a good performance kasi tayo ang host. No promises.”
