MAPUA finished off its NCAA Season 94 campaign on a high, blasting lowly Arellano, 91-78, on Tuesday at Filoil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
The Cardinals turned it up a notch in the second half as the backcourt tandem of Cedric Pelayo and Noah Lugo helped their side slowly pull away and cruise to an easy win over the Chiefs, where they even took a lead as high as 19.
Pelayo uncorked a career-best 21 points on a 9-of-19 shooting, to go with his six rebounds and an assist, while Lugo also went for 21 points and two assists to help Mapua end up with a 6-12 record.
Laurenz Victoria got 15 points, five assists and four rebounds, Justin Serrano tallied a double-double with his 12 points and 10 boards, while Arvin Gamboa had 10 points, three rebounds, and three assists.
For coach Atoy Co, it was only a matter of the Cardinals rectifying their mistakes coming off their 86-64 defeat to San Sebastian last week - a game he called a "disaster."
"We're not moving ball, not passing to the free man, and everyone just want to play for themselves," he said, pleading to his boys to fix those woes.
"Before we started the game, I talked to the boys and told them that this is our last game and I'd like to finish on a good note naman. Mas magandang matapos na may isang panalo. Dati na namin tinalo ang AU, baka kaya namin i-repeat, but we have to play as a team."
And Mapua did heed his words, dishing out 25 assists that led to its 43-percent shooting clip in the game.
Ian Alban led Arellano in the losing cause with 19 points and three rebounds, as Michael Canete got 15 points and 13 boards.
The Chiefs fell to a 5-12 record, with one more game scheduled against San Sebastian on Tuesday.
