SAN Beda coach Boyet Fernandez is willing to play the long game with James Canlas.

Though the 19-year-old guard has struggled to get his game going this NCAA Season 94 seniors’ basketball tournament, the veteran mentor remains optimistic about what the future holds for the rookie.

“Bata pa siya, but he is the future of San Beda. So we'll be patient with him,” he said.

Through the Red Lions’ first three games, Canlas has been averaging 4.3 points on a 42-percent shooting from the field, on top of 2.0 rebounds, 0.3 assists, 0.3 steals in 13.4 minutes of action.

He did have a breakthrough in San Beda’s big win over Mapua on Friday, when he tallied a season-best nine points, five rebounds and an assist in 19 minutes of play.

However, Fernandez raised his eyebrows on the 6-foot-3 playmaker’s paltry 3-of-12 field goal shooting clip.

“James Canlas took so many shots and he missed a lot. But come to think of it, if he made that shots, I think yung 18-point lead namin magiging 20 or 22 eh,” he said.

Fernandez believes that sooner or later, Canlas can get his groove and be a significant contributor for the Red Lions.

“Again, he's just adjusting eh. You know James can shoot the shot and we saw him play in the Filoil. He can make those shots against Gilas, so I think it's a matter of James being confident making those shots. He has to really have the conviction na every time he takes that shot, he will make it,” he said.

“I have veteran players like Robert (Bolick) and Javee (Mocon) and Donald (Tankoua) that will really help him improve. Hopefully, when these guys graduate, it will be the time of James.”
