ST. BENILDE begins its campaign in the NCAA Season 102 men's basketball tournament with back-to-back wins, the most recent one a 98-82 manhandling of debuting Lyceum on Thursday at the Playtime Filoil Centre.
The formula the Blazers used last Sunday to down defending champion San Beda worked wonders anew: unleashing their brand new weapons in Matthew Jucom and Irele Galas and flanking them with the veteran smarts of the likes of Justine Sanchez and Josh Cajucom
With that, the boys of rookie head coach Paolo Layug are the first to two wins in the young season, while also spoiling the Pirates debut of coach Jamike Jarin.
“‘Di kami pwede mag-relax. Magpapahinga lang kami bukas and then the next day, bakbak agad sa ensayo,” Jucom said after finishing with 17 points and six rebounds.
Galas chipped in 13 points, while Sanchez and Cajucom each turned in 12 markers.
Renz Villegas’ 24-point outing went for naught, as LPU dropped its first game in this new era under one-time collegiate champion coach Jarin. The troika of Matthew Rubico, Simon Peñafiel, and Roger Ondoa had 11 points apiece.
