Will Gozum wins it at the stripe as Red Robins edge Red Cubs to keep top spot in NCAA Juniors

    Sep 8, 2017

MAPUA Red Robins prevailed against the San Beda Red Cubs, 73-71, in the second round of the NCAA Season 93 juniors basketball tournament on Friday at The Arena in San Juan.

Will Gozum led Mapua with 22 points and eight rebounds, while Warren Bonifacio and Mike Enriquez chipped in 13 and 11 markers, respectively.

Despite falling behind San Beda in the first quarter, 16-23, Mapua surged in the second quarter via Gozum’s efforts, scoring 14 in the period to tie the game with 37-all.

It was a tight game since then, with the game tied at 71 in the final minute of the match after a basket by Red Cub Prince Entrata.

However, San Beda’s Sean Garcia fouled Gozum with only 3.8 seconds left in the fourth quarter and Gozum banked two free throws to secure their win against the Cubs.

“Naexecute yung depensa namin siguro may konti kaming lapses kaya naka three points sila. Mabuti na lang hindi nag-panic yung mga players kaya nakabalik kami tapos siyempre yung factor na nakuha ni Will (Gozum) yung dalawang free throws ang nagpanalo sa amin,” Mapua coach Randy Alcantara said.

The Red Robins now own a 9-2 win-loss record to stay on the top spot of the standings while the San Beda Red Cubs are down with a 6-5 card.

“Malaking bagay sa amin ang panalo na ito kasi nakita naman natin yung standings, yung game ng La Salle (Benilde Blazers) kaparehas namin, so kapag nagpaiwan kami malamang isang kurap namin mapunta na lang kami sa three or fourth (spot). Malaking bagay itong panalo kasi nadagdagan ang kumpiyansa namin na second-straight win namin ito bago namin makaharap yung Arellano,” Alcantara said.
