SAN Beda High School locked up the third seed in the NCAA Season 94 juniors basketball tournament, holding off Lyceum, 83-76, Thursday at Filoil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
Kai Oliva rescued the Red Cubs late, dropping eight of his 14 points in the fourth quarter, to go with three assists and two rebounds.
Jade Talampas also tallied a double-double of 14 points and 13 boards, Troy Valencia added 14 points and six rebounds, and Winston Ynot got 11 points and eight rebounds as San Beda improved to 12-5.
The Red Cubs, however, almost suffered a 17-point meltdown as John Barba commandeered the late Junior Pirates rally that cut the deficit down to five, 80-75 with 19.1 seconds remaining.
San Beda, though, showed poise from the charity stripe as Penny Estacio and Oliva iced the game from the foul line in the waning moments of the game.
The Red Cubs have one more game against Perpetual on Tuesday before moving on to face second-seed Mapua in the Final Four.
"I’m still happy with where we are," remarked coach JB Sison. "Yung maturity of these guys, late na in the season, but hopefully, our momentum will carry to the Final Four."
Barba topped Lyceum with 17 points, nine rebounds, three assists, and three steals, as Mac Guadana was held to just 13 points on a 4-of-16 shooting, while also grabbing three boards and three dimes.
Jearelan Omandac also had 13 point and seven rebounds in the loss as the Junior Pirates ended up at fifth place, with their 9-9 card equalling the school’s second-best NCAA finish set back in Season 92.
