Evan Nelle caps clutch heroics with game-winning basket as Red Cubs stun Light Bombers

Evan Nelle hit the winning basket with just 0.3 ticks left.

THE San Beda Red Cubs edged the Jose Rizal University Light Bombers, 70-69, in the second round of the NCAA Season 93 juniors basketball tournament on Friday at The Arena in San Juan.

Evan Nelle sparked the Red Cubs' escape act in the dying moments of the game after trailing by three points with eight seconds left in fourth quarter.

Nelle sank two free throws after being fouled by JRU’s Javine Serrano to come to within one point, 68-69.

The Red Cubs then forced a turnover and Nelle scored a fastbreak lay-up with only 0.3 seconds on the shot clock to secure their win.

“Actually swerte na lang yun na-force namin yung turnover. Naka-agaw kami ng bola pero buong game actually hindi namin alam paano i-stop rebounding nila,” San Beda coach JB Sison admitted.

Nelle led the Red Cubs with 19 points, while Peter Alfaro and Prince Etrata chipped in 13 and 11 points, respectively.

“Mabigat (ang panalong ito) kasi talo kami sa kanila (JRU) noong first round, kaya kailangan talaga namin makabawi. Mabuti na lang nakaagaw kami ng bola,” Sison said.

The Light Bombers lost after having 56 total team rebounds compared with San Beda with only 37.

With the win, the Red Cubs improved with a 8-5 win-loss record, while the Light Bombers now have a 4-9 win-loss card.

San Beda will face the Arellano University Braves on September 28 at the same venue.

“Arellano is in the middle of the standings kaya kailangan namin lumayo sa standings sa kanila,” Sison said.
